Adaptive Gear Reviews

This page is for adaptive gear only, those special designs that we use for daily life as well as for hunting & outdoor purposes. When we find something that we really like, we’re going to post it here. Some of these products will be placed in other areas of DHM after being reviewed by our staffers and we always welcome hot tips from our readers.

Please feel free to submit a review to us anytime if you find a useful product. Thank you.

My4Hands produced by BreakThru Horizon.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure how much use I was going to get out of this product, but it wasn’t very long before I found myself reaching for it every day, mostly during meals. My4Hands is ideal for preparing meals and ferrying them from the kitchen to the dinner table, especially the hot dishes. It doesn’t slip on my lap and nothing I put on it slides around. It’s really good when you need to carry a bunch of items at once which saves me a bunch of trips back & forth to the kitchen.

I usually use it twice a day now, sometimes three times. I haven’t taken it to the grocery store but I imagine it’d work well there too. I’ve already gotten my money’s worth out of it at home. Sometimes I use it to cut things up on my lap or prepare dishes. I’ve also used it as a tv tray to eat off of. I’d recommend this product to anyone.

The SuperStand from the Standing Wheelchair Co. – This is a product I use religiously every other day as part of my therapy, but it has several benefits for daily life.

For one, it’s good for your body and bones to regularly put pressure on them in a vertical position. I found that out after three bouts with bladder stones. After years of sitting, my bones started losing calcium and other minerals which ended up in my bladder. Standing was the only thing that stopped it.

Another thing I like about this chair is that I can get in it by myself and stand up anytime I want during the day. It comes in a totally manual model, which I have, a half-powered and a full-powered option. And insurance companies will often pay for the SuperStand.

I can use it in the kitchen to reach things, or in social settings when I want to talk to people face-to-face for a change. Please go by their site and learn more about this chair.

Merrell Isotherm Zip boots, produced by Merrell.

This is a boot I found last year that I new I’d have to try as soon as I saw it. I know it wasn’t made for disabled hunters, but it’s a cold weather boot that you don’t have to go through the hassle of lacing up every time you put the on (or unlace to take them off.) For a quad hunter, this boot saves a lot of work for whoever is helping you put your shoes on.

Another thing I like about this product is that it’s made for extreme cold weather. All disabled hunters know how hard it is to keep your legs & feet warm during winter hunts. Well, this boot is made for the snow which means it’s meant to keep your feet warm & dry during those really frigid days. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you won’t regret buying this boot.

Sidewinder Cocking Device made by Parker Bows.

I wanted to include this hand-cranking crossbow cocking device in the reviews because it’s the one that comes recommended for use with all the Scorpyd bows, one of which I will be getting this year to hunt with this fall (more on that later.)

All crossbows have similar cranking devices, enabling any disabled hunter with limited arm strength and no grip to be able to cock his/her bow with minimal effort. I like this specific one because it can easily slip on and off the butt of the stock so you can put it away when you’re not cocking your bow, and the fact that it fits a lot of different models. I can’t wait to put it to use this summer.
